A 1000th match for Robert Dubuc

A 1000th game for Robert Dubuc

Robert Dubuc will experience a special moment on Friday evening, when his team, the Terrebonne Cobras, will host the Collège Français de Longueuil. He will lead the 1000th game of his career in the regular season. A magic tray for any trainer.

Dubuc will thus become the third coach in the history of the Ligue de hockey junior AAA du Québec (LHJAAAQ) to reach this mark after Pierre Petroni and Stéphane Scotto.

“I didn't realize that I headed to this plateau, except when I had to tie my skates for practice,” said Robert Dubuc with a laugh. , so Jos Canale had asked him to be his deputy.

“Jos had coached me when I was playing. I had done half a season with him. Subsequently, he was hired by the Saguenéens of Chicoutimi. And me, I found myself at the head of the Cyclones. »

A matter of passion

He immediately fell in love with this job. Today, he is still driven by this love of hockey even though the sport has evolved a lot over the years.

“It's my passion,” said Dubuc. About ten years ago, I was as emotional as when I was playing. I was leading like a cowboy. I'm still impulsive, but I'm able to analyze situations better.

“At home, my father always had businesses. I saw him go into management. I do the same with my team. It's my company. I am privileged because I have been playing hockey full time for 18 years. »

In a league where personnel turnover is high every year, Dubuc is a rare bird. He is in his 16th season at the helm of the Cobras.

“Owner Marino Fabbri and I have developed a great bond over the years. He became a friend, said the 62-year-old coach. Marino is a successful businessman and he knows how to run his companies. I try to do the same with his training. »

Exceptional players

Dubuc has managed several hundred players during his career. Surprisingly, those who scored him weren't the most talented.

“There's one I won't forget and that's Joel Roch,” said the hockey man. He was quite the captain for our team.

“He wasn’t my best player, but he was the most dedicated guy. He made a difference in my team and in my organization.

“He showed how important the Cobras were to him. He was an indispensable defender. »

“I still have chills”

He also has good words for Maxime Robert, Loik Léveillé and Chad Pietroniro. < /p>

“Maxime was my captain with the Laflèche College Titans,” explained Dubuc. The Shawinigan Cataractes wanted to ride him and he had asked for a few days of reflection.

“To give an idea of his appreciation to his teammates, the whole team had come to his house with their sweaters on the back. He had created a slogan that had followed us all season. I still get chills when I talk about it. »
