A Francophone on the CN Board of Directors

MISE À DAY

After coming under fire for the absence of Francophones on its board of directors, Canadian National (CN) announced Thursday the appointment of Michel Letellier to this position.

Holding a bachelor's degree in commerce (finance) from the University of Quebec in Montreal and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Sherbrooke, the 58-year-old man will join the board Oct. 1, CN said in a news release.

Mr. Letellier has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of Innergex Renewable Energy, whose head office is located in Montreal, since 2007. He also worked as head of development and operation of hydroelectric projects at Boralex.

In April, Mr. Trudeau said he was surprised to find “that a company like CN, a national company, subject to federal rules, subject to the Official Languages Act” had no member of its board fluent in French, in the continuity of the scandal linked to French at Air Canada.

CN had reacted by assuring that it would rectify the situation in the coming months.
