Samuel Montembeault will play his first preseason game of the camp this Wednesday evening. The Bécancourois goalkeeper is in battle with Cayden Primeau for the position of auxiliary – or goalkeeper 1B – behind Jake Allen.
Acquired on waivers from the Florida Panthers a year earlier, almost to the day, the 25-year-old says his physical floor is where he finished last season. It's now for him “a matter of increasing it”.
Clearly, consistency will be key in determining where he starts the season.
“There are several good goalkeepers here and I don't take anything for granted. I worked hard all summer to try to get the number 2 job, he hinted in the morning, alluding to his recovery from wrist surgery.
“Tonight I have a chance to prove myself for the first time. I just want to continue like this.”
The big difference with last year? His lateral movements.
“My movements are fast from right to left. I gained a lot of power. On the technical side, we will continue to work on the same things.
