Fatal collision in Centre-du-Québec

A man lost his life and four other individuals were injured in a serious accident involving two cars and two motorcycles in Arthabaska, in the Centre-du-Québec region, on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred in a curve on Route 161, near Poirier Street, around 4:30 p.m. For some unknown reason, a motorist traveling northbound would have deviated from his lane to end up in the opposite direction.

It was at this moment that he allegedly hit a motorcyclist head-on who was driving in his direction. However, the vehicle continued its course to mow down a second motorcyclist who was following the first, as well as a car which was bringing up the rear.

The man who was on board the first motorcycle that was stamped unfortunately lost his life, explains Béatrice Dorsainville, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ). It is Lino Fortier, 57, from Ascot Corner near Sherbrooke, police confirmed on Monday.

Four other individuals in the various vehicles were also injured, but more lightly.

“Road 161 was completely closed to allow two reconstructionists to establish the circumstances of the event,” says Ms. Dorsainville. The analysis of the scene was concluded around 1:30 a.m.

For the moment, no hypothesis has been prioritized on the cause of the first motorist leaving the road. Alcohol or drugs are not in question, however established the SQ.

“For the moment, we are not talking about criminal charges in this file there”, also added the door -spoken by Louis-Philippe Ruel.
