On 8 January the researchers reported the largest annual decline in cancer mortality in the United States, which they attributed to advances in the treatment of lung tumors, says Fox Business.
According to a new report by the American society for the fight against cancer, since 1991, overall cancer mortality is reduced by about 1.5% per year. According to Rebecca Siegel, lead author of the study, this is the biggest fall in national cancer statistics for the period up to 1930.
“Statistics are completely due to lung cancer,” she says, ” about a quarter of all cancer deaths. Get lung cancer from the list and drop in 2017 will amount to 1.4%”.
Government researchers have previously reported a slightly lower drop in cancer mortality over the same period. But the cancer society expects the mortality rate in different ways, and January 8, it was stated that the decline was greater — and even the record.
Most cases of lung cancer related to Smoking. Decades of anti-Smoking resulted in a reduction in the incidence of lung cancer and mortality from this disease. However, according to Siegel, the decline in mortality appears to have accelerated thanks to recent advances in treatment of lung cancer.
First on the list are enhancements to surgery, improved diagnostic scan and a more precise x-ray methods. Also note the influence of new drugs.
Genetic testing now can identify specific mutations of cancer cells that allow more targeted therapy with the use of new pharmaceuticals, which go beyond traditional chemotherapy.
“It’s an exciting time,” said Dr. Jyoti Patel, a lung cancer expert at northwestern University.
According to her, even patients with late stage cancer survive for several years, not months, after the start of treatment.
“It was very, very unusual just a decade ago,” she said.
According to Patel, the new drugs for immunotherapy can accelerate the reduction in mortality.
Researchers cancer Society also found that:
total cancer mortality rates decreased nearly 30% between 1991 and 2017;
mortality from one type of skin cancer decreased even more sharply than from lung cancer — in recent years, it is reduced by 7% per year. This reduction in patients with melanoma is associated with medicines appeared on the market about 9 years ago;
reduction of mortality from prostate cancer, breast cancer and colon is slowed down for a number of reasons;
increased mortality from liver cancer seems to be somewhat levelled. This may be due to more effective treatment of hepatitis C, which are associated with about 25% of cases of liver cancer, said Siegel.
