Nadal returns to Cincinnati after a month's absence

Nadal returns to Cincinnati after a month away

Absent in Montreal, Rafael Nadal confirmed Thursday that he will return to competition next week in Cincinnati.

A month after giving up the semi-final at Wimbledon last month, the world number three announced on his Instagram account that he would be making the trip for the seventh tournament 2022 Masters 1000 of the Year.

“I am happy to play Cincy again,” he wrote before leaving his native Spain on Thursday.

First place in sight

Forced to be inactive due to a torn abdominal, Nadal was supposed to stop in Montreal to compete in the National Bank Open, but he had to withdraw a few days before the start of the tournament.

His presence in Cincinnati will serve as preparation for the United States Open tennis tournament, which will begin at the end of the month and where he will try to add a 23rd major title to his dazzling record.

However, a victory in the final in -Cincinnati, a competition he has won only once (in 2013), would allow him to reach the first place in the world ranking if the current holder, Daniil Medvedev, fails to reach the quarter-finals at the same tournament.

As a reminder, the Russian was eliminated from the start in Montreal on Wednesday by Australian Nick Kyrgios in three sets of 6-7, 6-4 and 6-2.

Praise for Kyrgios

Speaking of Medvedev, he was quite complimentary when asked to comment on the performance of Kyrgios in Montreal.

“ I have seen him very focused and he has shown, for some time now, a good determination to win matches.

“Currently , he can beat anyone. He played at an incredible level in Montreal and was simply better than me on the court.

“At the rate things are going, Nick will be seeded at the United States Open. United at Flushing Meadows. »
