U.S. Secretary of state Michael Pompeo has issued a statement on the occasion of the opening of the American Consulate in Nuuk in Greenland on 10 June, writes “Voice of America”.
According to Pompeo, the event “reflects the commitment of America to strengthen cooperation with the people of Greenland and the entire Kingdom of Denmark”.
“Our presence in the city of Nuuk will strengthen the prosperity that we share with our friends in Denmark and Greenland, while we cooperate with other allies and partners in the Arctic to ensure the stability and sustainable development in the region, — said Pompeo. — We thank the many partners in Denmark and Greenland for the help in realization of this important step towards strengthening our cooperation.”
As you know, the President of the United States trump last year expressed the idea of acquiring the Islands from Denmark.
Except for the presence of valuable natural resources, observers have noted that Greenland has a defensive value to the United States because there are already houses a us military base.
“In less than 1,000 miles from the North pole, Thule Air base on the Northwest coast warns of missile attacks, helps the US government to tracking and monitoring space,” reads the Forbes article on this issue.
The idea of selling Greenland rejected in Denmark.
“Greenland is rich in valuable resources, including mineral resources, pure water and ice, fish, marine mammals, renewable energy and new frontiers travel adventures. We are open for business, not for trade”, — said in the government of Denmark.
The Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen called the idea “absurd” and said: “Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is NOT a Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland”.
The US President then called off his planned August visit to Denmark.
“Denmark is a special country with wonderful people, but on the basis of a review of the Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that she is not interested in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will postpone our meeting which was to be held two weeks later, at another time,” wrote trump on Twitter.
Then the trump with humor responded to the critics ‘ fears about the intentions of the US in Greenland.
“I promise not to do this in Greenland!” — wrote the President of the United States on Twitter along with the image of gold “trump tower” in Las Vegas, superimposed on a photo of the Greenland settlements.
Trump ordered to build a fleet of icebreakers to the end of the decade
Donald trump tasked the departments of the United States to create a fleet of icebreakers and build military bases with the aim of promoting US interests in the Arctic and Antarctic, reports “Voice of America”.
This is stated in the Memorandum issued on June 9 to “ensure the national interests of the United States in the Arctic and Antarctic” and addressed to the state Department and departments of homeland security and Commerce.
The Memorandum specifies “to work out options in the Arctic to perform a range of tasks to ensure national and economic security (including assistance in the development of natural resources, the laying and repair of submarine cables)”.
According to the Memorandum, office of the United States within 60 days to submit a plan, which would include the construction of at least three icebreakers until 2029, and the construction of four military bases to support this activity, including two bases abroad, the United States.
The Republican Senator from Alaska, Dan Sullivan has welcomed the decision of trump, noting that it will help US to strengthen positions in the region.
“Our opponents are far ahead of the United States on infrastructure in the Arctic, — quotes the Sullivan Defense News. — We have only one heavy and one medium Polar icebreaker class”.
Now the US has one heavy icebreaker, at that time, like Russia — 40 icebreakers, Finland — 7, while Canada and Sweden — 6-breakers, writes the Guardian.
As previously wrote ForumDaily:
On August 16 last year, trump expressed interest in buying Greenland, part of Denmark as an Autonomous territory.
Denmark stated that it did not intend to sell the island. In response, the U.S. leader canceled a scheduled visit to Copenhagen.
Why Trump took Greenland, and how much they offered?
