Outdoors: 5 activities to do in the middle of the night in Quebec this summer ;summer

This summer, to enjoy the holidays differently, why not try a nocturnal outdoor activity? On the water, in the air or in the heart of the forest: there are original options all over the province.

Here are some of them:

Aquatic labyrinth in the dark

In Wakefield, the Éco-Odyssée nature park offers adventures by pedal boat, canoe, kayak or paddle board through a 6.4 km aquatic labyrinth. You can venture there during the day at any time, or even in the dark on Saturdays and Sundays. Two outings are offered in the evening: Le Crépuscule, to enjoy the sunset, or Le Clair de lune, to sail under the stars. During the Perseid period – from August 10 to 14 this year – night outings are added.

Night hikes

Did you know that some national parks in Quebec offer guided night hikes to discover the forest differently? At Jacques-Cartier National Park, for example, you can take part in the “Mysteries of the Night” activity (2 hours) and walk in the woods by lantern light. At Parc national du Bic, the guided hike “At dusk” allows you to discover the Chemin-du-Nord trail (2h) under the stars.

Other nighttime discovery activities are also offered here and there in Sépaq parks, in particular for stargazing or hearing tales and legends. In Parc national d'Oka, you can even go kayaking at dusk.

In Saint-Siméon, the Palissades de Charlevoix offers a brand new activity: an illuminated via ferrata. The Lynx route is illuminated with a string of solar-powered LED lights, and it is possible to walk it with a guide on Fridays and Saturdays.

There are also two other places in Quebec where it is possible to do a via ferrata course at night, but only by the light of a headlamp: at the Cap-Jaseux adventure park, in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, and Batiscan River Park.

At Cap Jaseux, the activity is only offered during the full moon (this year: June 24, July 23-24-25 and August 20-21).

As for Via Batiscan, which includes a giant zip line, the activity is only possible if there are 10 registered participants.

There are several different guided sunset sea kayaking tours in Quebec, but those that take place after dark are rarer. Among the latter: the “Éveil nocturne à Bergeronnes” outing, offered by the company Mer et monde Écotours, on the North Shore, which allows you to observe the phenomenon of bioluminescence and listen to marine mammals using hydrophone on the St. Lawrence.

The Cap Jaseux adventure park, in the Saguenay Fjord, offers sea kayaking excursions under the full moon (on the same dates as the via night ferrata mentioned above).

The Arbraska parks in Rawdon, Rigaud, Mont-Saint-Grégoire, Quebec (Chauveau) and Gatineau (Laflèche) invite adventurers to “wake up the night owl in them” by trying their aerial courses in the evening , by the light of a pe frontal. These routes are made up of nets, footbridges, swings and “monkey bridges” in the treetops. The night activity lasts about 3h30.
