CF Montreal's next opponent, the New England Revolution is far from looking good and its head coach Bruce Arena is aware of the precariousness of the team's position in the standings.< /strong>
Defeated 3 to 1 by the Houston Dynamo on Tuesday, the “Revs” occupy the ninth place in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS ). With three games to go, including Saturday's game at Gillette Stadium against CF, they are three points behind in a playoff spot. In addition, their direct competitors all have an encounter in hand.
In short, the positive elements are rather rare in a formation with only three wins in its last 15 outings. It is important to its players to collect the nine points still within their reach and Arena wanted to send them a rather powerful message through the media.
“I don't know the mathematical odds of our qualifying in the playoffs, but I don't think they're great. We will certainly try to win our last three clashes, except that we tried to win tonight [Tuesday]. We did it all against the New York Red Bulls [in a 2-1 loss on Saturday] and came up short. And before that, we had a poor home stay. So, there are no excuses. It was our responsibility and we did not perform to achieve our goals,” he said curtly, as reported by the official MLS website.
These were not the only bitter words from Arena towards his troops, who could have weathered a more severe thaw had it not been for the eight saves by goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.
“We played poorly. […] You can issue a million reasons, but the fact remains that we were dominated all evening. We seemed like a tired team and also a group that doesn't play together. After 70 minutes it was 1-1 and to be honest it was a miracle. We deserved to lose the game and we have to take responsibility for it,” he shouted.
“We don't deserve to be in the playoffs”
For his part, captain Carles Gill made a statement that says a lot.
“ We have lost so many matches. There were a lot of chances to get to the playoffs. I think we don't deserve to be in the playoffs because we're not a competitive club, me included. These are difficult times for everyone, “said the only scorer for his team in Houston.
Likely, a lot of people in the locker room will have to look in the mirror. For example, there is defender Brandon Bye who took the path of the bench after half-time because of all his work.
“I could have replaced 8- 9 guys based on their performance. But with all due respect to Brandon, I expect more from him. He's in his fifth year in the league and he should be solid every game,” Arena said.
TVA Sports will be broadcasting Saturday night's game.
