New vehicle sales: historic low since 2009

According to the Car Guide, the automotive industry saw its sales decline significantly in the first half of 2022. June would have been the weakest month since the recession of 2009.

The automotive benchmark said supply and production issues explain the difficult results. According to estimates by the firm DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, sales were down 11.5% compared to the previous year.

Sales for the second quarter of 2022 show a decline of 10.2%. The fall continues, since the decline was 12% in the first quarter.

The fall was particularly brutal for Asian manufacturers.

“This is the case for Honda ( -37.5%), Mazda (-31.4%), Kia (-28.2%), Nissan (-23.3%), Toyota (-11.2%) and Hyundai (-10.4%) )”, according to the Car Guide website.

For its part, General Motors fell by 6.6%.

Despite everything, a few companies were in able to experience growth.

For example, Stellantis grew 16.6% over the same period of 2021, driven by a 28.6% increase in Jeep sales .

Ford and Volkswagen were not left out with increases of 9.5% and 5.1% respectively.

“The Grand Cherokee and Wrangler each beat their own quarterly record,” said the Car Guide.
