RIMOUSKI | Inspired by goaltender Charles-Edward Gravel who blocked 32 shots, the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada ruined the home opener for the Océanic with a 5-0 win this Saturday in Rimouski.
Head coach Serge Beausoleil appreciated the work of his youngsters, but he blamed some veterans for their lack of enthusiasm on some of the visitors' goals. “We dominated the first two periods, but we go back to the locker room 1-0. It happens, these are situations that have to be managed, but we did not know how to do it in third. We gave out overkill after overdrive,” he analyzed.
The Océanic totally dominated the first period.
The Océanic dominated the first period. Serge Beausoleil's men, however, failed to beat Armada goalie Charles-Edward Gravel despite dominating 11-3 in shots. Julien Béland was the most threatening in the Océanic camp with his linemates Xavier Fillion and Jan Sprynar. Defender Charles Côté supported the attack a few times.
Xavier Fillion battled hard with Antoine Roy for possession of the disc.
The Armada took advantage of a power play early in the second period to open the scoring on a shot from the face-off circle by Alexis Gendron that Océanic goaltender Gabriel Robert would surely like to see again. Thomas Cardinal and Alexis Brisson are accomplices. The Océanic dominated most of the midfield engagement, but the Armada keeper was solid and helped three times by his posts as he was beaten by Coursol, Dumoulin and Sprynar.
The Armada scored three unanswered goals in the third period to oust Océanic goaltender Gabriel Robert, who conceded four goals on 17 shots. Anri Ravinskis took advantage of a nice pass from Gendron to double the visitors' lead. Alexey Kulikov then scored his first career on the Courteau circuit. Jonathan Fauchon took advantage of poor communication between goalkeeper Robert and Alexandre Blais to make it 4-0 shorthanded. Fauchon added a 5th goal for the Armada in the last minute of play.
Rookie forward Quinn Kennedy was playing his first home game in the regular season.
Besides the injured Luke Coughlin, Serge Beausoleil left out defender Cory MacGillivray and forwards Shawn Pearson and Jude Campbell. The Armada was deprived of the services of Jérémie Dumas-Larouche, Eliot L'Italien and Xavier Sarrasin, all injured.
The announcement of the new captain, Frédéric Brunet, and his assistants Jacob Mathieu, Mathis Gauthier, Simon Maltais and William Dumoulin was made at the end of the presentation of the players, before the match. The same two teams will meet again on Sunday at 3 p.m.
