Toronto: Man shot by police after assaulting woman

A man who allegedly stabbed a woman and kept a child locked inside a home in Scarborough, a Toronto neighborhood, was finally killed by police on Saturday afternoon.

Officers attended the scene around 2:30 p.m. after a call about a woman who had been stabbed, CP24 reported.

The man suspected of stabbing her then grabbed a child and he entered a residence near Midland Avenue and Kingston Road.

Police began to interact with the man, before three officers fired on him, Toronto Police Chief James Ramer said.

The 42-year-old man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The woman suffered serious injuries, but is now in stable condition. The child was not physically harmed.

“The SIU will investigate the incident, the interaction between the individual and the police. And then we will, at the same time, simultaneously investigate the initial incident and the stabbing of the woman,” said Chief Ramer, according to CP24.
