Two chiantis (not Classico, but organic) for the weekend

The region where Chianti is produced is immense: it extends over 160 km, from north to south. This is more than the entire territory of Bordeaux. For a long time – apart from the Chianti Classico appellation area – Chianti wine attracted little attention. This rule has tended to change in recent years, thanks in part to the sustained efforts of artisans such as the Lottero family, who have been practicing organic farming since 1978 on their vast property in Pontassieve.

The property, now in the hands of Faye Lottero, extends over 110 hectares and culminates at 450 meters above sea level on the Montefiesolen hill. The vine, introduced in 2004, covers around twenty hectares, alongside cereals, forests, including a few truffle oaks and a small farmhouse. The following two wines, freshly arrived on the shelves of the SAQ, are both models of the dynamism and renewal of the region.

Fattoria Lavacchio, chianti 2020, Puro, Italy

$21.25 – SAQ code 12848367 – 13.5% – 1.4 g/L – Organic

Produced without the addition of sulphites, this cuvée still bears its name very well in 2020. On the nose and on the palate, we are struck by the purity of the aromas of black fruits which emerge in the mouth, on a delicate aniseed background. The tannic structure is supple and flowing on the attack, then the tannins tighten and display the vigor specific to Sangiovese. The wine nevertheless looks like a wine of thirst and pleasure, Tuscan style. Delicious! *** 1⁄2 $$

Fattoria Lavacchio, chianti Rufina 2019, Cedro, Italy

$22.25 – SAQ code 14460411 – 14% – 1.3 g/L – Organic

Chianti Rufina is one of six sub-zones created in 1932, in an effort to define the vast territory of Chianti. It is also arguably the most meritorious of the six. The Cedro will immediately seduce the classic Sangiovese lover with its nose of leather and spices. The palate is a notch more solid than that of the Puro, without heaviness or rusticity. A good red wine nourished by the Tuscan sun, but endowed with great gastronomic potential. To be served around 16°C, with braised meat or mushroom risotto. *** 1⁄2 $$
